The Legacy Look
Kennedy Uniforms + Enduring Style
I watched Love Story, and I don’t even own a television—which says something about the Kennedy intrigue, and smart writers. We’re all curious about a family whose lives are consumed as a shared cultural story, though it doesn’t feel right. This was a couple so focused on privacy that their wedding guests didn’t know the location until they were ferried by fishing boat, at night, to Cumberland Island.
My inbox is suddenly full of Carolyn-inspired styling emails, which is unsettling. As chic as she was, the point isn’t to dress up just like her. Unlike Jackie, who stepped into a public role with grace, Carolyn famously resisted the spectacle entirely—she was the cool outsider.
It’s worth remembering that she was a young, working woman in Manhattan. Her simplicity seemed practical. She seemed to have a small, stylish wardrobe that functioned well and repeated often. Some of it was likely gifted, borrowed, or saved up for. She did work at Calvin Klein. Any woman who has earned her way in New York, especially working in fashion, understands this approach and is regularly wearing samples. You find what works, and over time it becomes a uniform.
